溶解性:
醇酸树脂,芳香族甲醛树脂,沥青,尿酸酯树脂,纤维素乙酸丁酸盐,氯化橡胶,达马树脂,环氧树脂,乙烷纤维素,三聚氰胺树脂,植物油,酚类树脂,聚苯乙烯,聚乙烯氯化物,乙烯乙烷聚合物和蜡状物,这些都很容易溶解在四乙二醇二甲醚。不溶性的塑料品包括聚四氟乙烯,聚乙烯,聚丙稀,聚丙烯腈,聚酰胺和PET。天然橡胶在四乙二醇二甲醚中可以膨胀。
存储建议:
四乙二醇二甲醚被保存在聚乙烯的圆桶或大的同种容器中。乙二醇醚和它们的衍生物在有氧存在时可以形成过氧化物。因此四乙二醇二甲醚要保存在含有100mg/kg的2,6-Di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol中。由于产品的湿度问题,所以要真确的储存,以保证防止水分的吸收。

四乙二醇二甲醚是一种质子惰性的溶剂,其本身有很高大额溶解,成膜和聚结特性。它被用作助溶剂来减少预聚物的粘度。它也被用来生产丙烯酸油漆的粘合剂例如,在汽车方面的应用。使用四乙二醇二甲醚做为涂料的配方可以允许减少或避免其它组分如水平助剂和流变修饰剂的使用。
化学合成:
四乙二醇二甲醚可以被当作惰性反应溶剂在很多方面应用。它在低于150℃时不于碱金属反应。因此,它可以被用作有机金属反应中的组分(如Grignard反应)和包含碱金属的反应(如Wurtz反应和Birch还原反应)中。四乙二醇二甲醚对硼氢化钠和其他无机盐如, NaI, NaF, NaH, LiCN等来说是一种优良的溶剂。铝的氢化物和钙铝氢化物能在四乙二醇二甲醚溶剂中被准备好或者被使用。
四乙二醇二甲醚与标准溶剂如DMF和DMSO比较起来有相似的溶解性质,可以被用作它们的替代溶剂。
四乙二醇二甲醚在氢化物的还原反应中做为功能性溶剂也显示了良好的性能,特别在包含NaBH4或NaH的反应中。在四乙二醇二甲醚中NaBH4的溶解度大约为25℃下160g/L。四乙二醇二甲醚(也包括三乙二醇二甲醚)在含有NaBH4的还原反应中由于形成了Na+离子的配合物而可以提高还原能力和反应速率。

四乙二醇二甲醚在有机合成中能被用来做为相转移催化剂(PTC)替代更昂贵的冠状醚类。它可以被使用在许多有机反应和亲核取代反应中包括SCN和KOCl的苯甲基乙醇的氧化反应。

危险特性:易燃,遇明火、高热易引起燃烧爆炸。与氧化剂能发生强烈反应。接触空气或在光照条件下可生成具有潜在爆炸危险性的过氧化物。其蒸气比空气重,能在较低处扩散到相当远的地方,遇明火会引着回燃。

健康危害
侵入途径:吸入、食入、经皮吸收。
健康危害:吸入该品蒸气引起无力、失眠头痛、胃肠功能紊乱、夜尿、体重减轻、眼烧灼感、反应迟钝、嗜睡。误服可致死。
慢性中毒:神经衰弱综合征、大细胞性贫血、白细胞减少;严重者呈中毒性脑病和脑萎缩。
急性毒性:LD502460mg/kg(大鼠经口);2000mg/kg(兔经皮);LC504665mg/m3,7小时(大鼠吸入)
亚急性和慢性毒性:家兔经口,0.1mL/(kg·天),7天,见暂时性血尿。加大量剂量,可致衰竭、震颤、蛋白尿和血尿。尸检见严重肾损害。大鼠暴露于1.05g/m3,7小时/天,每周5天,1月后见血液中幼稚白细胞增加。
致突变性:显性致死试验:大鼠经口500mg/kg。精子形态学:大鼠经口500mg/kg。
生殖毒性:大鼠经口最低中毒剂量(TDL0):175mg/kg(孕7~13天),致心血管(循环)系统发育异常。小鼠经口最低中毒剂量(TDL0):250mg/kg(1天,雄性),影响精子生成(包括遗传物质、精子形态、活动力、计数)。
危险特性:易燃,遇高热、明火或与氧化剂接触,有引起燃烧的危险。接触空气或在光照条件下可生成具有潜在爆炸危险性的过氧化物。
燃烧(分解)产物:一氧化碳、二氧化碳。
