Budapest, 25th July 2009 - After the accident during the qualifying session of the Grand Prix of Hungary, Felipe Massa was airlifted to the AEK hospital in Budapest. Felipe was conscious at the arrival at the hospital and his general conditions remain stable. Following a complete medical examination it emerged that he had suffered a cut on his forehead, a bone damage of his skull and a brain concussion. These conditions need to be operated on after which he will remain under observation in intensive care.

After undergoing an operation yesterday afternoon, Felipe Massa's condition remains stable and there were no further complications through the night. He will be given another CT scan today, which will provide more precise information.

Felipe Massa has undergone successful surgery at the AEK hospital in Budapest after crashing heavily during the qualifying session for the Hungarian Grand Prix. However, the Brazilian's condition remains critical.

"Massa's condition is serious and life-threatening but stable," summarized Peter Bazso, the hospital's medical director during a news conference late today local time.

Lajos Zsiros, the hospital's chief of surgery, and Bazso explained that they induced coma for Massa, given the seriousness of the injuries. The Brazilian driver is also on a respirator as a precautionary measure.

However, Ferrari spokesman Lucal Colajanni said there was no danger to Massa's life, describing such statements as "absolute nonsense."

The hospital is expected to provide an update on Massa's condition late on Sunday morning.

Massa - che è stato colpito da una molla staccatasi dalla BrawnGp di Rubens Barrichello durante le qualifiche del Gp di Ungheria - ha riportato un trauma cranico con stato commotivo e le sue condizioni vengono definite serie, ma stabili. Secondo i medici dell'ospedale ungherese serviranno da uno a tre giorni per valutare se vi sono

danni cerebrali e l'eventuale entità. Massa, che è stato operato nel pomeriggio, è sotto sedazione.

Felipe Massa è ricoverato all’ospedale AEK in centro città. E’ stato operato alla testa con esito positivo, non è in pericolo, ma le sue condizioni destano qualche preoccupazione soprattutto per quanto riguarda i tempi di recupero. Al momento rimane sotto osservazione in terapia intensiva ed è tenuto in coma farmacologico, come è prassi in questi casi.

Il medico personale: dati positivi. Il medico personale di Felipe Massa, Dino Altman, prima di partire dal Brasile per Budapest e incontrare il suo paziente, al telefono ha detto che tutte le notizie su Massa sono positive. «In una scala da 3 a 15 sui parametri del trauma, ove i numeri alti corrispondono ai dati migliori, Massa si posiziona a 14. È chiaro che con i traumi cranici bisogna essere prudenti, ma le notizie che abbiamo sono positive. E poi è importante che Felipe non abbia mai perso di fatto del tutto conoscenza».

Intervento chiururgico riuscito. Un accurato esame dei medici dell'ospedale Aek di Budapest ha evidenziato che Felipe Massa ha subìto un taglio sulla fronte, una lesione ossea sovraorbitale sinistra e una commozione cerebrale. Pertanto si è resa necessaria un'operazione per la riduzione della lesione ossea. L'intervento chirurgico è stato effettuato con esito positivo.

Massa sta bene, ma non correrà domenica. Come si vede dalle immagini televisive, il fuori pista sarebbe stato causato da una molla staccatasi dalla Brawn Gp di Rubens Barrichello che lo precedeva. È quanto fa sapere la scuderia di Maranello. «È come se Massa fosse stato colpito da un uccello o da un pezzo della macchina di Barrichello ma - ha rassicurato il team principal della Renault Flavio Briatore - risponde e ha nulla di rotto». A rassicurare ancor più sulle condizioni di Massa erano state dopo l'incidente le parole del manager Nicolas Todt: «Sta parlando, è cosciente». La Brawn Gp di Barrichello è stata sigillata dai commissari di pista. Stefano Domenicali, team principal della Ferrari, ha detto che «le condizioni di Massa si sono stabilizzate. E' cosciente e questa è la cosa più importante».

Le qualifiche. Fernando Alonso su Renault ha conquistato la pole position del Gp di Ungheria. Brutto incidente e grosso spavento per Felipe Massa uscito fuori pista al termine della seconda manche delle qualifiche andando a sbattere violentemente contro le barriere di protezione. Nella griglia di partenza, partirà dal secondo posto la Red Bull di Sebastian Vettel, mentre la Ferrari di Kimi Raikkonen partirà dalla settima posizione.

Una giornata strana quella delle prove di oggi a Budapest, caratterizzata anche dal black out del sistema computerizzato, tanto che alla fine sono stati necessari diversi minuti per capire chi fosse in pole e le altre posizioni con i piloti attoniti e perplessi, accolti nella lounge del circuito da un altrettanto attonito Bernie Ecclestone. Poi i festeggiamenti e le conferenze dei tre più veloci. Quarto Lewis Hamilton a conferma della ritrovata McLaren Mercedes, davanti a Nico Rosberg (Williams), e a Heikki Kovalainen, l'altra McLaren.

La Ferrari di Felipe Massa è uscita fuori pista al termine della seconda manche delle qualifiche del Gran Premio di Ungheria andando a sbattere violentemente contro le barriere di protezione. Sul posto sono accorse due ambulanze, la safety-car e un elicottero. La vettura è poi stata portata via dalla autogru e il pilota brasiliano è stato condotto al centro medico. Massa è stato colpito sul casco da una molla partita dalla vettura di Barrichello, che gli ha fatto perdere i sensi prima di uscire fuori strada. Briatore: «Il pilota sta bene». Massa ha ripreso conoscenza, e ha risposto alle domande dei medici. E' stato comunque trasportato all'ospedale di Budapest con l'elicottero per effettuare dei controlli.

DOMENICALI - «È stato intubato per tranquillizzarlo, ma sta bene è tutto sotto controllo». Il team principal della scuderia Ferrari, Stefano Domenicali, rassicura sulle condizioni di Felipe Massa dopo il brutto incidente nelle qualifiche del Gp di Ungheria. Il brasiliano però - ha aggiunto Domenicali ai microfoni della Rai - «domani non correrà». A spiegare come è andata la dinamica dell'incidente il portavoce della scuderia Ferrari Luca Colajanni: «Massa è stato colpito di striscio da un oggetto che sembra essere una molla volata dalla carrozzeria della macchina di Barrichello. Massa sarà sottoposto ad esami approfonditi, ma è cosciente e sta bene. Non sembra abbia lesioni apparenti».

ECCLESTONE - «Non è vero che non è successo niente, qualche cosa è successo. C'è un ragazzo che è in ospedale e non è nemmeno colpa sua». Così interrogato sull'incidente occorso al pilota della Ferrari Felipe Massa ha risposto il patron della Formula 1 Bernie Ecclestone.

LA DINAMICA - La Ferrari ha confermato ufficialmente ciò che aveva già anticipato informalmente Stefano Domenicali: Felipe Massa non correrà domani, a causa delle condizioni dopo l'incidente che lo ha estromesso dalla terza qualifica. Il pilota ha riportato una forte contusione all'occhio sinistro, con una lieve ferita superficiale e uno stato di choc e dunque non può in nessun caso essere della gara. Il regolamento prevede che un eventuale sostituto avrebbe dovuto fare almeno un test. Ciò non è avvenuto e quindi la Ferrari manderà in pista il solo Kimi Raikkonen. Sempre la Ferrari ha detto che l'impatto contro il muro di gomme è avvenuto a una velocità attorno ai 190 chilometri orari. Il casco, colpito fortunatamente non in pieno ma parzialmente di striscio, è rimasto gravemente danneggiato. Poi la componente metallica è andata a sbattere contro una delle pance laterali, bucandola. A quanto si è appreso, Massa ha risposto alle domande lucidamente ma molto agitato. È stato quindi sedato, intubato e portato in uno degli ospedali di Budapest. La Ferrari ha chiesto ufficialmente alle televisioni e ai giornalisti di non andare all'ospedale.

COMMOZIONE CEREBRALE E LESIONE OSSEA - Un accurato esame dei medici dell'ospedale Aek di Budapest ha evidenziato che Felipe Massa ha subito nell'incidente che lo ha escluso dalle qualifiche, un taglio sulla fronte, una lesione ossea sovraorbitale sinistra e una commozione cerebrale. Pertanto si renderà necessaria un'operazione per la riduzione della lesione ossea, «dopo la quale Felipe rimarrà sotto osservazione in terapia intensiva». Lo dice la Ferrari in un comunicato ufficiale. Massa era cosciente al suo arrivo in ospedale e le sue condizioni sono stabili. Ulteriori informazioni sono annunciate per la serata.

INTERVENTO RIUSCITO - L'intervento chirurgico su Massa a seguito dell'incidente al gp di Ungheria ha avuto esito positivo. Lo ha comunicato la Ferrari confermando che il pilota rimarrà sotto osservazione in terapia intensiva. Un aggiornamento sulle sue condizioni verrà diffuso domani in tarda mattina.

«DOMANI SAPREMO COME STA» - «Nella sfortuna Felipe è stato anche fortunato». Stefano Domenicali, che è andato a trovare Massa all'ospedale Aek di via Karoly, ha davvero tirato un sospiro di sollievo: «L'operazione è riuscita, domani quando lo sveglieranno, se lo sveglieranno, sapremo definitivamente come è andata. È stato sfortunato, ma nella sfortuna è stato anche fortunato. Pezzi che cadono a quella velocità diventano proiettili. Per fortuna che ha colpito di striscio il casco e che il casco ha tenuto molto bene».

ANSIA PER FELIPE - A tenere in apprensione però sono le dichiarazioni del neurologo dell'ospedale Aek di Budapest: «Felipe Massa è arrivato in condizioni stabili ma incosciente. Abbiamo fatto tutti gli esami, ha una frattura al cranio con danno cerebrale, abbiamo fatto un'operazione di un'ora ed ora è in condizioni stabili. Aspettiamo di vedere il recupero quando si sveglierà. Ha problema agli occhi? No, al cervello. E' lievemente danneggiato. Ha problemi seri al cervello. Conseguenze? Vedremo, adesso è presto per dirlo. Cercheremo di svegliarlo domattina alle 10. E' in coma indotto e con il respiratore artificiale. Ora dorme, prima ha risposto alle nostre domande ed era in grado di capire. Non ha problemi agli altri arti. Pericolo di vita? Troppo presto per rispondere a questa domanda».

Unkarin GP:n aika-ajoissa vakavasti loukkaantuneen F1-kuljettajan Felipe Massan tila on kohentunut.

Massaa hoidetaan Budapestin sotilassairaalassa. Unkarin puolustusministeriön tiedottaja Istvan Bocskai kertoi Unkarin televisiolle, että Massa on vähitellen heräilemässä keinotekoisesta koomasta, johon hänet on vaivutettu.

- Massa on hereillä yhä enemmän ja pystyy kommunikoimaan aktiivisesti, eli hän reagoi siihen kun hänelle puhutaan. Olemme optimistisia ja toivomme, että hidas toipumisprosessi on alkamassa, Bocskai sanoi.

Bocskain mukaan Massa pystyy liikuttamaan käsiään ja jalkojaan, mikä viittaisi siihen, että kuljettajan aivot eivät vaurioituneet onnettomuudessa. Tässä vaiheessa lääkärit eivät kuitenkaan vielä pysty olemaan asiasta täysin varmoja.

Massa's race engineer Rob Smedley told BBC Sport: "There is hope now which at one point (on Saturday) there wasn't. His injuries seem to be not as bad as we first thought.

"I don't even want to think about F1 at the moment - Felipe is a mate, he is like a little brother to me. I just want to think about him getting better and being back with his family.

"He is still in intensive care and we are all just waiting for news hour by hour. We don't know how long he will be kept in there - it could be days, it could be weeks."

Os médicos do Hospital Militar de Budapeste divulgaram mais um boletim médico sobre o estado de saúde de Felipe Massa. Após passar por mais uma tomografia computadorizada, o brasileiro foi desentubado e não está mais sedado, ou seja, saiu do coma induzido. O piloto também está enxergando, outra preocupação dos médicos.

Massa já consegue responder com coerência às perguntas que são feitas a ele, mas ainda está um pouco confuso, sem saber direito onde está, o que é normal pelo tipo de acidente que ele sofreu. De acordo com Dino Altmann, médico do GP do Brasil de Fórmula 1 e da Stock Car, que acompanha a família do piloto em Budapeste, o prognóstico para a recuperação é animador.

- Ainda não teve uma variação, mas não tem nenhuma razão para ele não enxergar. Com o olho que está aberto, que não está inchado, ele enxerga tudo. Esperamos que ele melhore cada vez mais. Budapest, 27 July 2009 - The medic's at Budapest's AEK hospital presented a chart of Felipe Massa's condition.

All the exams done by the Hungarian medical team were negative, which is a further confirmation of the encouraging signs over the last hours.

The Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro driver, who's no longer artificially ventilated, met his family answering to their questions.

As far as his left eye is concerned the doctors confirmed that close evaluation has to be done over the next days.

Felipe now sleeps without the help of sedatives with his wife, his parents, his brother and his friend and manager Nicolas Todt by his side. They will spend another night in hospital, where they will meet Stefano Domenicali tomorrow.

More positive signs for Felipe Budapest, 28 July 2009 - More good news as far as the condition of Felipe Massa, recovering at Budapest's AEK hospital since 25 July after the accident during the Hungarian GP's qualifying, is concerned.

"His condition is improving quickly and constantly. He is more and more awake and reactive," Dino Altman, his personal doctor, said. "He spoke to several people today, using three different languages, replying always in a coherent way. He's also progressing with his physiotherapy very well. He opened his left eye and confirmed that he can see with it. As far as the near future is concerned we have to be cautious, but I have to say that also today there are very positive signs."

This morning Stefano Domenicali came back to Budapest. "It's good to have comforting news. I spoke to Felipe and it was very emotional for me: he recognised me and I brought him a message from everybody at Ferrari and from the fans all over the world. I told him that his red car will wait for him until he's ready to race again. Now we've got to take it step by step and remain cautious, but it's really incredible to see all of this progress only three days after the accident."

Many messages wishing him well arrived at Felipe and his family over the last hours and several friends came to Budapest to see him. Today Jean Todt and Michelle Yeoh,who met and spoke to the Brazilian driver, arrived in the Hungarian capital.

First steps for Felipe

Budapest, 29th July 2009 – More good news from the AEK in Budapest, where Felipe Massa has been recovering since last Saturday. The driver has had more exams carried out, confirming his continuing improvement. Felipe speaks, can sit upright and was even able to take his first steps. Today he will leave intensive care.

From the clinical and radiological point of view everything is going extremely well. Felipe will stay at the AEK hospital for the next view days, until he can be taken somewhere else.

More good news about Felipe Massa's health. The Brazilian driver, who went back to Brazil last night, has been examined today at the Albert Einstein hospital of Sao Paulo. All tests for any problems were negative so it was decided that Felipe could be dismissed later in the day.

Felipe Massa checked back into hospital on Monday after returning to his native Brazil. The Ferrari driver spent the previous nine nights in Budapest's AEK hospital, after undergoing surgery for serious head injuries sustained in a Hungarian GP qualifying crash ?something he unsurprisingly has no recollection of.

Massa returned to Sao Paulo by private plane on Monday, but according to the Associated Press was later admitted to the Albert Einstein Hospital, where he is expected to remain for two days for tests.

The AFP news agency said the Brazilian was transferred directly to the hospital by helicopter from Sao Paulo airport. His father Luiz Antonio Massa said the hospital stay would not be lengthy and involved only check-ups.

Speaking to the official Ferrari website on Monday, Massa admitted he still has no memory of the Hungarian qualifying incident.

"I know exactly what happened, that a spring came off Rubens' car and hit me on the helmet,?Massa said.

I know that something happened to me, but I didn't feel anything when it happened. They told me that I lost consciousness at the moment of the spring's impact on my helmet and I ran into the barriers, then I woke up in hospital two days later. I don't remember anything and that's why what the doctors did had to be explained to me.

“Felipe has had a remarkable recovery," Dino Altmann, his personal doctor, said.

“We did a series of in-depth tests and the outcome is very encouraging so that we, together with the hospital's medical staff, decided that it wouldn't be currently necessary to further intervene from a surgical point of view. The best thing for him now is to go back home, where he can calmly convalesce and rehabilitate.”
