航空工业中常用的铝合金主要集中在Al-Cu和Al-Zn两类合金。

Al-Cu铸造合金是应用最早的一种铸造合金，其最大的特点是耐热性高，是所有铸流铝合金中耐热性最高的一类合金。其高温强度随着铜含量的增加而提高。但铜含量增加，合金的密度增加，脆性增大，耐蚀性降低。该合金具有高的热处理效果和热稳定性，适于铸造高温铸件。

但这种合金的线收缩和热裂倾向大，铸造性能差，易产生热裂纹。为了提高合金液的流动性，改善其铸造性能，减少铸后热裂倾向，常加入适量的硅以形成一定量的三元共晶组织（α+Si+CuAl2）；但硅的加入同时会损害合金的室温性能及高温性能。

铝合金是制造飞机用的主要材料。铝合金与制造汽车用的软钢比较起来，价格贵、密度小，相对密度为2.8，与软钢相对密度7.8比较，约轻三分之一，尽管强度相差不多，但对飞机来说，材料轻是最主要的，而且耐腐蚀性较强，加工也方便，故铝合金是制造飞机最理想的材料。
